Empowering Agriculture and Youth: 6th Convocation of SKUAST-K Marks a New Era for Jammu & Kashmir

The Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K) echoed with pride, purpose, and promise as it hosted its 6th Convocation Ceremony in Srinagar today. The prestigious event was graced by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, who delivered a powerful address, reaffirming the government’s commitment to agricultural transformation in Jammu and Kashmir.
The convocation ceremony saw Union Minister for Agriculture & Farmers Welfare and Rural Development, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, as the Chief Guest, with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also present among other dignitaries.
In his address, the Union Minister extended heartfelt congratulations to the graduating students, lauding their achievements and calling it a significant milestone. Reflecting on his visit, he remarked, “The natural beauty of Kashmir and the love of its people has won my heart.” He emphasized the Centre's commitment to making Jammu & Kashmir a horticulture hub under the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
A Celebration of Academic Excellence and Women Empowerment
The spotlight of the convocation shone brightly on women achievers. Out of 150 gold medals, 115 were awarded to women, and 334 of the 445 Certificates of Merit were conferred to female students. Women accounted for 2,661 of the 5,250 total degrees awarded across undergraduate, master's, and Ph.D. programs.
Praising this achievement, LG Manoj Sinha said, “Proud to see our daughters breaking barriers and achieving success in Agricultural Science & Technology. This reflects a bright future for J&K and the nation.”
Transformative Vision for Agriculture in J&K
Highlighting the sweeping reforms in the Union Territory's agri-sector, LG Sinha said, “Under the visionary leadership of Hon’ble PM Narendra Modi, agriculture has become a mainstay of India’s economy. Jammu & Kashmir is witnessing the same transformation.”
He pointed to the Holistic Agriculture Development Programme (HADP) as a national model of agricultural revolution, aimed at transitioning J&K into a sustainable and commercial agri-economy. Four major goals have been outlined:
- Building a sustainable-commercial agricultural sector
- Developing an integrated agri-business ecosystem
- Enhancing farmer incomes
- Ensuring livelihood security for farming families
LG Sinha urged graduates to be the torchbearers of innovation in areas like agri-tech, food technology, AI, and gene editing, adding, “Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself.”
Commending SKUAST-K’s progress, LG Sinha lauded Vice Chancellor Prof. Nazir Ahmad Ganai for steering the institution toward excellence. The University’s advancements in cutting-edge research and the establishment of centres of excellence in fields such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, gene editing, regenerative medicine, and speed breeding are propelling the UT toward becoming a knowledge-based and bio-economy-driven region.
Laying the Groundwork for Inclusive Growth
To support inclusive academic growth, Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan laid the foundation stone for a Girls’ Hostel on campus. The initiative reinforces the Centre’s commitment to women's education and empowerment in the region.

- Minister for Education, Health & Medical Education and Social Welfare Ms. Sakina Itoo

Also present were heads of educational institutions, senior officials, proud faculty, and parents who came together to celebrate the students' achievements.The 6th Convocation Ceremony of SKUAST-K was more than just a formal academic event; it was a symbol of transformation, empowerment, and visionary leadership in Jammu and Kashmir.
